Erasmus MC • PhD in Interventional Neuroradiology Technologies You will develop and evaluate new techniques to make thrombectomies simpler and more effective. Thrombectomy is a relatively recent treatment option for strokes caused by a blood clot blocking a major artery in the brain. During this procedure, an interventional radiologist removes the clot using a catheter. Although highly effective, it is also technically challenging. In collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and Philips, Erasmus MC is developing new technologies to simplify this procedure. Within the Q-MeDIA project, funded by Health~Holland, the focus is on integrating diagnostic information into the intervention. The goal is to make it easier to reach the site of the blockage and to better assess the success of the treatment. As a PhD candidate at Erasmus MC, you will work closely with a PhD candidate from TU/e. You will contribute to the development of new technologies, actively collect imaging data for both development and evaluation, and conduct studies to test these technologies in clinical practice. • Design studies to collect imaging data (including patient interaction when required). • Collect imaging data during stroke treatment procedures. • Design and conduct studies evaluating new technologies in clinical practice. • Collaborate with physicians, TU/e researchers, and Philips. • Present research at international conferences and publish scientific papers. Work environment You will join the Biomedical Imaging Group Rotterdam (BIGR), part of the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at Erasmus MC. The group offers a multidisciplinary research environment with approximately 30 PhD candidates, weekly seminars, close collaboration with interventional radiologists treating around 300 stroke patients annually, and strong opportunities for scientific and personal development. Qualifications and skills • University degree in Technical Medicine, Biomedical Engineering, or related engineering field with clinical interest. • Knowledge of medical image processing. • Python programming experience or willingness to learn. • Knowledge of stroke pathology or willingness to learn. • Strong communication and organizational skills.
