Functiebeschrijving

NWO-I Institutenorganisatie van NWO NWO-I Intranet Kruimelpad • PhD Position: Moiré materials in high magnetic fields Nijmegen 32 tot 40 uur Schaal: OIO Sluitingsdatum: 23 augustus 2026 Are you interested in nanotechnology and experimental condensed matter physics and looking for a PhD position? HFML-FELIX invites applications from motivated candidates for a PhD project in cutting-edge high-magnetic-field research. The project will focus on moiré materials and offers the opportunity to work at the forefront of this rapidly developing field. The research project focuses on moiré materials: atomically thin layers stacked with a small twist angle, creating a new, larger periodic structure. This leads to remarkable electronic properties. For example, twisted bilayer graphene can exhibit superconductivity, while a single layer of graphene does not. These materials also show unusual behaviour in high magnetic fields, such as the emergence of quasiparticles that behave as if they experience zero magnetic field. Understanding these effects is at the forefront of research into quantum phases of matter. In this project, you will fabricate moiré materials such as twisted multilayer graphene within the newly established 2D materials lab at HFML-FELIX. You will integrate these materials into nanoelectronic devices using advanced cleanroom facilities within the NanoLabNL network. You will perform experiments at low temperatures and high magnetic fields to study how moiré potentials influence correlated electronic phases. During your project, you will present your results at group meetings and international conferences, and publish your findings in scientific journals. You will actively collaborate with other PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and scientific and technical staff at HFML-FELIX working on related topics. You may also contribute to teaching activities within Radboud university and support for guest researchers of the research facility of HFML-FELIX (maximum of 10% of your time). Your working environment The position is hosted by Radboud University and embedded in the PhD Graduate School of the Institute for Molecules and Materials . You will be based at HFML-FELIX, working in the newly established research group of Dr Robin Dolleman, providing an exciting opportunity to contribute to a new research direction at HFML-FELIX, while maintaining active connections with a network of research institutes across the Netherlands. The research environment encourages close collaboration between experimentalists and theoreticians, alongside strong engagement with international research infrastructures and external guest researchers. This collaborative setting enables cutting-edge studies of low-temperature quantum transport, superconductivity and functionality of two-dimensional material devices. What you bring • You have a Master's degree in experimental or applied physics, or a related field (e.g. nanotechnology, materials science, or condensed matter physics). • You have a strong interest in nanotechnology, low temperature physics and condensed matter physics. • You are proficient in written and spoken English, equivalent to at least CEFR level C1. • You can take initiative in your own research while contributing to a collaborative team environment. If you do not meet all the requirements but are enthusiastic about the project, we encourage you to apply. What we offer • A challenging and meaningful position for 40 hours per week. • A collegial team in which we help and support each other. • A four year PhD position, with a go/no-go decision to be made after a year and a half. • A training program for PhD candidates with Radboud University IMM Graduate School . • A gross full-time monthly salary of €3,115, which will increase every year, in accordance with the salary scales for research trainees (OIOs) of the collective labour agreement for research institutions, plus holiday pay and a year-end bonus. • Our excellent secondary employment conditions can be found here , such as the option to choose more than 8 weeks of holiday per year.
