In this role, you will lead the discovery of neuromorphic computing's potential for scientific research. You'll experiment with cutting-edge technology, build strong partnerships across the ecosystem, and translate insights into real impact. Where you will work SURF is the national ICT cooperative for research and education in the Netherlands. We provide the digital infrastructure, advanced computing capabilities, services and platforms that empower Dutch science - from high-performance computing and advanced networking to trusted data services. The team you will join You'll work within SURF's Future Technologies & Applications team - a group that explores and experiments with cutting-edge technologies and assesses their impact for education and research. We drive strategic initiatives across the ecosystem, and we give our people the freedom to do the same. What you will do Neuromorphic computing is no longer a research topic, It's moving into practice and SURF intends to be at the frontier of what that means for national research infrastructure. We want to know where neuromorphic technology can add value and impact to Digital Infrastructure for Research, and where it can open up possibilities that simply weren't there before. We're looking for someone who thrives in that space. You will lead SURF's exploration of neuromorphic computing, with a sharp focus on value for scientific research, hands-on experimentation, and building the ecosystem around it. You bring curiosity and execution in equal measure: testing ideas, validating use cases, forging partnerships, and turning findings into insights for strategic direction. • Identify high-impact opportunities for neuromorphic computing across research domains, including AI, simulation, sensor processing, robotics, edge science, and energy-efficient workloads. • Design and run experiments, pilots, and proof-of-concepts together with researchers, vendors, and technology partners. • Evaluate how neuromorphic systems can integrate with existing research computing environments - HPC, cloud, data platforms, and scientific workflows. • Translate technical findings into clear, actionable recommendations for SURF members, leadership, and national stakeholders. • Build and activate strong innovation partnerships with universities, research institutes, and technology companies focused on neuromorphic computing in the Netherlands and across Europe. • Stay ahead of market developments, research breakthroughs, and the emerging vendor landscape. Your skills and experience You get energised by technology that isn't fully mapped yet. You're grounded in real outcomes - but you don't wait for someone else to define the path. You move from ambiguity to action, from prototype to impact, and you bring people with you along the way. You bring: • A background in advanced computing, digital infrastructure, scientific IT, AI systems, semiconductors, or a related field. • A background in Numerical algorithms, applied mathematics and scientific programming, e.g., C/C++/Python/Julia • Affinity with sparse solvers & energy-efficient computations • Strong affinity with emerging compute paradigms - neuromorphic, heterogeneous, edge, accelerator-based, or similar. • An experimental mindset: you test assumptions, learn fast, and iterate on evidence. • An entrepreneurial drive: proactive, opportunity-oriented, and energised by building something new. • The ability to connect researchers, engineers, technology providers, and decision-makers - and make those connections productive. • Strong communication skills: you translate complex technology into clear opportunities and real choices.
